RUCĂR -BRAN PASS (DN73)

The Rucăr-Bran Pass, traversed by DN73, offers a breathtaking journey through the Carpathians, connecting historic Transylvania with picturesque Wallachia. The road takes you through diverse and breathtaking scenery. Near Câmpulung, it crosses the Southern Carpathians along the Dâmbovița River, winding through charming villages like Rucăr, Dâmbovicioara, and Bran. You can connect with the Transfăgărășan via DN73C (Curtea de Argeș-Câmpulung) and with DN1 and DN1A through DN73A (Rucăr-Predeal).

As the main access route to ‘Dracula’s home,’ the Moeciu – Bran area attracts a large number of tourists, so it’s best to avoid weekend travel. Additionally, since the road is still undergoing modernization works in 2026, you may encounter temporary traffic lights along the way.

  • Bran Castle: The most famous tourist attraction in Romania, internationally known as “Dracula’s Castle.” Here you can visit the museum, the castle itself, and enjoy the medieval atmosphere. First documented in 1377, Bran Castle initially served as a military fortress and a customs post. Over time, it held various roles, including a residence for the princes of Transylvania. Its association with the Dracula myth was popularized by the novel of Irish writer Bram Stoker. The story annually attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists eager to discover its atmosphere of mystery and legend.
  • Râșnov Fortress: A well-preserved peasant fortress located on a rocky hill near the town of Râșnov, it offers a superb view of the area. Unlike other fortresses built for rulers, Râșnov Fortress was erected in the 14th century by the town’s inhabitants to defend against Tatar invasions. It served as a refuge and was designed as a permanent settlement, with houses, a school, and even a chapel inside its walls, allowing the locals to withstand prolonged sieges.
  • The Zărnești Bear Sanctuary (Libearty): A sanctuary where over 100 rescued brown bears live in a natural environment.
